H1N1 INFLUENZA

campus h1n1 vaccinations

In late October 2009, the Cleveland Department of Public Health and the Cuyahoga County Board of Health provided Case Western Reserve University with about 4,200 doses of the H1N1 nasal spray vaccine. If the vaccination supply is depleted quickly, on-campus opportunities to receive the vaccine may need to be suspended until more vaccine arrives.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the H1N1 vaccine first be administered to certain groups:

  • All residential students
  • All student athletes
  • All students ages 25 and younger (Students under 18 years of age need a signed parental/guardian consent form.)
  • All students, younger than 50 years old, working in health care or service professions
  • All faculty and/or staff members 25 years of age or younger

To receive the vaccine, individuals in the higher-risk groups listed above must:

  • Be healthy (fever free without utilizing fever reducing medication at the time of the vaccine)
  • Not have any chronic diseases such as: asthma, diabetes, lung disease, kidney or liver disease, anemia or other blood disorders or other chronic illnesses that effect swallowing or breathing
  • Not be pregnant

Information regarding the availability of H1N1 vaccines for additional faculty, staff and students will be circulated to the campus community as it is made available by county officials and the federal government.

As additional vaccine becomes available, the university will continue to follow CDC recommendations for administering it.

Specific members of the Case Western Reserve community as indicated above can receive H1N1nasal spray vaccinations during the following campus clinics:

  • Monday, November 2, form 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Thwing Center 1914 Lounge
  • Monday, November 2, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. in the Thwing Center Ballroom
