Position Description

Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences
Case Western Reserve University

The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Arts and Sciences, guiding people and programs encompassing undergraduate and graduate study and discovery in disciplines that are the oldest in the University even as they are integral to many of the institution's most forward-looking initiatives.

Key among the many dimensions of the Dean's role is that of providing leadership for the College's faculty, some 220 men and women organized into 22 academic departments. Working with department chairs as well as elected faculty leaders, the Dean guides academic program planning, recruitment, and resource allocation, and directs the College's budget and administrative services. The Dean is also the College's principal representative to other units of the University and to all external groups and individuals, including alumni, friends, donors, and current and potential partners in educational and research programs. The Dean leads all advocacy and fund-raising activities for the College, working with members of the University's administration and with volunteer leaders.

The College

Within the University, the College is the enrollment home of more than 1200 undergraduate and 500 graduate students pursuing degrees in the arts and sciences. In addition, the College's faculty offer courses to meet the general education requirements of undergraduate students based in other units of the University: the Case School of Engineering, the Weatherhead School of Management, and the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing.

Reporting Relationships

The Dean reports to the President of the University through the Provost, and with the deans of the other seven major academic units is a member of the Deans' Council. The University employs a "responsibility center" system in which a dean of an academic unit has significant responsibility for both the income and expense budgets associated with that unit's programs.

Currently reporting to the Dean are the College's Associate Deans (3), Assistant Deans (4), Department Chairs (22), and Program Directors (6).

  • Leads the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in developing and implementing programs of research, scholarship, and creative endeavor in their fields and in cooperation with colleagues in other academic units and other institutions.
  • Reviews all recommendations for faculty appointments, promotions, awards of tenure, and compensation in the College and provides an independent recommendation. Recommends the appointment of department chairs and evaluates their performance. Actively pursues diversity along with academic excellence in faculty recruitment.
  • Represents the interests and enhances the prominence of the College within the University and with all external constituencies, and leads efforts to generate philanthropic support for the College's programs, working in coordination with University officers.
  • Maintains and strengthens the College's relationships with affiliated institutions in University Circle and elsewhere in the community.
  • Maintains liaison with alumni associations and advisory boards associated with the College.
  • Works with the President, Provost, and deans of other units to advance the interests of the entire University.
  • Develops annual operating budgets as well as short- and long-range financial plans for the College, and administers the College's financial management within the University's overall policies and guidelines.

  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, develop, and retain outstanding faculty and staff, with special commitments to diversity and to fostering excellent teaching, research, scholarship, and creative endeavor in the full range of disciplines represented in the College.
