Week of December 12, 2005

News and Announcements

- The recipients of the W.P Jones Presidential Faculty Development Fund for fall semester have been named. The fund makes available small grants (usually up to $4,000) to support the scholarly activities of untenured tenure-track faculty members in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. For a full list of winners and their projects, visit http://connection.case.edu/cas/.

- Harvey Buchanan, professor emeritus in the department of art history and art, recently received accolades as one of the winners of the Joseph D. Pigott Leadership Award from University Circle Incorporated. Buchanan was honored for his work with the John and Mildred Putnam Sculpture Collection, his 53 years of leadership as an art historian at Case, and as former provost of humanities and art. For more information, visit http://www.case.edu/news/2005/11-05/buchanan.htm.

- The team of Cyrus Taylor (physics), Ramani Pilla and Catherine Loader (statistics) recently created innovative statistical techniques that improve the chances of detecting a signal in large data sets. Their new technique can not only search for the “needle in the haystack” in particle physics, but also has applications in discovering new galaxies, monitoring transactions for fraud and security risk, identifying the carrier of a virulent disease among millions of people, or detecting cancerous tissues in a mammogram. The researchers reported their findings in the article, "A New Technique for Finding Needles in Haystacks: A Geometric Approach to Distinguishing between a New Source and Random Fluctuations,” in the December 2 Physical Review Letters. For more information, visit http://www.case.edu/news/2005/12-05/haystack.htm.

- The next “News and Events” e-mail will be sent on Friday, January 20, 2006. Enjoy the winter break and have a safe and happy holiday season!
