Sigma Xi

Welcome to the Case chapter of Sigma Xi

Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, is an international honorary research society with 70,000 members worldwide. Sigma Xi members can be found in virtually every branch of academia, government and industry, and are active in a broad range of activities from local science fairs to deciding issues of political importance relating to research. Nearly 200 members have won the Nobel Prize. Sigma Xi also publishes American Scientist six times a year and holds annual forums on topical scientific research issues.

Science Café Cleveland - Room Change!

Science cafés provide an informal public forum for the open discussion of current science issues; they are based on the European salon model and many such cafés are currently active throughout much of the world.

Science Café Cleveland is sponsored by the Case chapter of Sigma Xi and WGBH (Boston). It is a lively, informal scientific discussion in an inviting atmosphere of food and drink that takes place on the second Monday of each month at Great Lakes Brewing Company (2516 Market Ave, Cleveland).

Because of overwhelming demand for a larger space and a desire to be fully accessible (see below), we have shifted venues at GLBC. Instead of meeting downstairs in the Brewpub, we are now meeting in the Tasting Room on the second floor of the Brewery; the Brewery is a separate building at 2701 Carroll Ave (28th and Carroll), whose back faces the north end of the public parking lot near GLBC. The entrance to the building is on the opposite side, across from Dave's.

Thanks to our larger space, we're back to holding a single café, with drinks starting at 6:30 pm and discussion beginning around 7:00 pm. A few appetizers will be provided, and the bar will be available for attendees to purchase their own drinks. No reservations are needed; just show up and feel free to bring a friend. If you'd like to have dinner at the café, call in a  "to go" order from the BrewPub so you can pick it up before heading over to the Tasting Room.

For upcoming science café topics, check out the links above, or see what we're offering next.  If you would like to suggest a topic for a future café or would like to be added to our e-mail list, please send an e-mail to the Science Café Coordinator, Darin Croft.

*If you'll need to use the elevator, please send us an e-mail at least 24 hrs. in advance.
