Loan Application Process

New Borrower Information


Review the procedures below to apply for student loans listed on your financial aid award. If you have any questions regarding the application process, please feel free to contact the Office of University Financial Aid at 216.368.4530 or by email at faloans@case.edu.


Federal Direct Loans

  1. Log in to studentloans.gov using your FAFSA PIN, date of birth, social security number and the first two letters of your last name. (If you have difficulty with the studentloans.gov website, please contact the Department of Education's helpline at 800.557.7394.)
  2. Click on "complete Master Promissory Note" and choose "subsidized/unsubsidized." This MPN will be good for 10 years.
  3. If you have not done so in the past, complete entrance counseling by clicking on the appropriate link. You will then choose if you are a graduate or undergraduate student.
  4. CWRU will receive confirmation of your submitted documents within 48 hours.

Federal Perkins Loan or CWRU Loan

  1. You will receive an e-mail from ECSI when you have a university or Perkins loan that is ready to be signed.
  2. Go to heartlandecsi.com and follow the instructions under borrower/student login to complete entrance counseling and sign your Master Promissory Note.

Private Loans

  1. View and compare lender benefits and services through the FASTChoice Lender List.
  2. Choose a lender, click "apply" and complete the application.
  3. The Office of External Loans will certify your loan after we receive confirmation that the entire loan procedure has been completed.

Please note: Disbursement of private loans averages 3 to 4 weeks. Please apply early if you are borrowing a private loan.

If you choose a lender not on the CWRU preferred lender list, please email faloans@case.edu.


Federal Parent PLUS Loan

  1. Parents must log in to studentloans.gov. (If you have difficulty with the studentloans.gov website, please contact the Department of Education's helpline at 800.557.7394.)
  2. If you have not completed one in the past, complete the Master Promissory Note.
  3. Click on "Request PLUS Loan" and select that you are applying for a parent loan.
  4. You will be asked the loan amount you are requesting. You can choose a specific amount or choose "up to max," which will generate a loan for the total cost of attendance minus any other financial aid. A credit decision will be made during this step. If you are denied credit and receive an endorser for your PLUS loan, the endorser must log in to studentloans.gov and enter an award ID, which you can receive from the Office of External Loans.

If you are denied credit and receive an endorser for your PLUS loan, the endorser must log in to studentloans.gov and enter the award ID of the denied loan.

Students may receive additional unsubsidized loans if a parent is denied the Parent PLUS Loan. Please email faloans@case.edu or call 216.368.6153 to determine your eligibility.


Graduate PLUS Loan

  1. Students must log in to studentloans.gov. (If you have difficulty with the studentloans.gov website, please contact the Department of Education's helpline at 800.557.7394.)
  2. If you have not completed one in the past, complete the Master Promissory Note.
  3. Click on "Request PLUS Loan" and select that you are applying for a Graduate PLUS loan.
  4. You will be asked the loan amount you are requesting. You can choose a specific amount or choose "up to max," which will generate a loan for the total cost of attendance minus any other financial aid.
