What is the Celebration of Student Writing?
The Celebration of Student Writing is a university-wide showcase of student writing projects, held in conjunction with the Intersections symposium and poster session. The Celebration encourages students to re-present and display their research and writing in formats other than word-processed letters and lines on the printed page. Some students might wish to create video projects; others might produce poster presentations; still others might wish to design models or digital illustrations that present their writing projects in new media. The Celebration also affords space for those who wish to read portions of their writing.
Any writing-intensive class (First Seminar, University Seminar, Departmental Seminar) can apply for a dedicated class table in the Celebration. Individual students who wish to participate may submit individual proposals for presentation in shared tables or reading space.
How can faculty and writing instructors encourage participation?
If you are teaching or supporting a University or Departmental Seminar in Spring 2009, please consider building into your syllabus the expectation that your students participate in the Celebration. It is a marvelous opportunity to give students practice in presenting their research writing publicly and advertising the exciting work coming out of Seminars. If you taught or supported a First Seminar in Fall 2008, please consider contacting students who produced outstanding work and encourage them to participate. The Celebration is also a way to acknowledge the fine writing and thinking of students in their first semesters at the University.
How do I arrange for my class or some of my students to participate?
Please complete a class registration form for each of your classes that will participate and submit it by March 1, 2009. Please encourage individual students to submit individual registration forms for their projects. PLEASE NOTE: Registration for the Spring 2009 Celebration is now closed.
What resources are available?
2009 is the inaugural Celebration at Case. The best-established Celebration of Student Writing in North America is at Eastern Michigan University. See http://www.emich.edu/english/fycomp/celebration/index.htm for information about EMU’s Celebration, including a YouTube video. For additional examples of exciting student work that can emerge from, and along with, writing in general education courses, please see http://www.remediatethis.com/student/index.html .
The Writing Resource Center (http://www.case.edu/writing/wrc) can provide assistance to classes and to individual students working on projects; consultants are available to visit classes or for one-on-one consultations.
This event is being presented in conjunction with the Intersections: SOURCE Undergraduate Symposium and Poster Session.
