Writing Resource Center- Online Tutoring

The WRC offers Online Tutoring to Case students using Case Google Mail and its chat function available at webmail.case.edu. All online appointments are scheduled using WCOnline. Please note that although online tutoring takes place virtually, the sessions are designed to be as interactive as possible. Your online consultant will not edit or proofread, but work collaboratively with you on your writing.

Step-by-step instructions as well as tips for successful online sessions are provided below.

Instructions for Scheduling an Online Appointment

1. Go to www.casewconline.com and log-in using your network ID and WRC password. Note: if you are a first-time user, the system will prompt you to create an account.

2. Select "Online Consultation" from the main menu in order to view available times on the schedule.

3. Click on a white square to select an appointment with your consultant and make a note of his or her Case e-mail address.

4. Both you and your consultant will receive an automated confirmation e-mail.

Beginning Your Session

1. Log-on to your Case Google Mail account about 5 minutes before the scheduled time of your appointment.

2. Locate the chat box on the lower left-hand side of your screen.

3. Make sure you are logged into G Chat.

4. Begin typing the consultant's e-mail address/name in the "search/invite" text box. The consultant's e-mail address will be visible both on the online schedule and in your confirmation e-mail.

5. Once you have located the correct e-mail address, scroll on the right to click on "invite."

6. Type the consultant's name again in the dialog box and select "invite to chat" from the menu on the right.

7. The chat screen will appear on the bottom right hand side of your screen.

8. To enlarge your chat screen, click on the + or arrow button on the top right of the chat box.

9. For future sessions with the same consultant, find his or her name in your contacts list and right-click his or her name. Then select the "chat" option.

Sharing Documents

You can use the Gmail function or, with your consultant's permission, Google Docs to send your paper to your consultant at any point prior to your session. We recommend that you do this prior to logging into chat. Please note, however, that consultants are unable review your paper before your actual scheduled session.

Additional Tips for Online Consultations

1. Make sure you have saved your paper in a convenient, easy-to-find location and in Microsoft Word Format.

2. As with face-to-face appointments, we recommend that you come prepared with a list of concerns that you would like to discuss with your consultant during your session.

3. If you are new to online tutoring, we recommend that you schedule your first appointment well in advance of your paper's due date. If your paper is longer than 6-8 pages, we also recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment.

4. Do not use the Google Docs function unless you are certain that your consultant has access. If you are using this function, you may want to reserve 5-10 minutes of your first appointment to work out the document sharing options available through this program.

5. Be patient. The online mode differs in many ways from face-to-face tutoring. Sometimes you may have to restate your questions two or three times in order for your consultant to fully understand your concerns. You should also be prepared to answer several questions about your paper.

6. Be open to working collaboratively with your consultant. Writing Faculty at the WRC have a variety of instructional technques. In order to help you improve your writing, some may provide links to writing exercises and resources, offer advice on useful search techniques, or suggest that you consult offline resources.
