Campus Character

A Fragmented Patchwork

While the Case campus has several inviting and enjoyable gardens and quads, portions of the campus are neither inviting nor memorable. In some instances where a campus space has a strong or unique character, such as the Case Quad, the clarity of the space has diminished over time as the campus has evolved.

As the two campuses of Western Reserve University and Case Institute of Technology merged, selective demolition of some structures created open spaces. This selective removal and the incorporation of new structures must continue in such a way as to intentionally develop a unified pattern of spaces, shaped into a defined whole by carefully placed buildings and meaningfully configured open space. The campus landscape must be conceived as integral to the structures we create. Buildings and landscapes must be developed with attention not only to their function, architectural style, and detail, but also to their role as part of a larger Master Plan.

The character of the Case campus is strongly influenced by surrounding University Circle structures and landscapes. Careful integration of this unique context will strengthen the character of the campus and help provide physical connectivity within the district.
