VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

Campus Updates

Check back to this Web page periodically to read announcements for changes in normal university operations or other advisories.

Link to weekly campus advisories from John Anderson, provost and university vice president.

Traffic and Parking

For instance, to meet traffic control and security requirements for the vice presidential debate, access to some university parking garages and lots may be temporarily closed or limited, and some streets may be temporarily closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Campus and University Circle shuttle routes may be adjusted to help accommodate the access to parking lots and garages.

Every effort will be made to limit the inconvenience to students, employees, residents, businesses and visitors during this brief period and to keep all those affected by these changes informed. Faculty, staff and students will be notified of any changes in parking, traffic and/or facilities use as soon as details become available.

Ultimately law enforcement and security personnel will make final decisions regarding parking and traffic control in the days leading up to, and immediately before the debate itself.

For more information on possible parking and street closures and traffic rerouting, please visit this Web site periodically leading up to the event.

Here's what we know for now:

Here's what we have so far:

Case Quad Closings

Updated Sept. 24

All classes and other regular activities on the university's Case Quad (buildings in the area between Veale Center to Euclid Avenue and between Martin Luther King Blvd. and Adelbert Road) will be suspended from 11:00 p.m. on Monday, October 4, until midnight on Tuesday, October 5. Critical operations that must continue during this period will be determined in consultation with department chairs and staff supervisors, who will advise you directly if you are affected.

The Case Quad and the buildings on the quad will be off limits to everyone except for those so designated by the deans and other senior-level administrators. Faculty, staff and students who are conducting ongoing research and will need access to labs on this date should contact Brian Hurd (bkh@case.edu) to apply for special access on Tuesday, October 5.

Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing

Updated Oct. 1
Due to parking and security issues related to The Race at Case, Dean May Wykle has decided to cancel all classes at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing on October 5. Staff members will be dismissed at noon, with the approval of their supervisors.

North Campus Closings

Updated Sept. 24

College of Arts and Sciences and Case School of Engineering
All classes in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Case School of Engineering will be cancelled on October 5. Similarly, all staff members in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Case School of Engineering, except those critical to special functions, should not report to work on October 5. This will not count as a discretionary day. These decisions, which were made in consultation with Arts and Sciences Dean Mark Turner and Engineering Dean Robert Savinell, are based on concerns about parking and security on the Case Quad, in particular, and on the south side of campus, in general. The class cancellations are intended to offer students the freedom to participate in debate-related events. However, students who have special labs should consult with their professors, because faculty members have the right to reschedule classes or labs that are essential to their courses.

Faculty and Staff Time Off

Faculty and staff will not be expected to use discretionary or income protection days for any time missed as a result of the debate.

Classes

Students whose classes are cancelled or shortened due to the debate should check with their instructors for information regarding alternative arrangements.

Athletic Facilities

On Wednesday, September 8, the Nautilus and Cardio area in Veale Center is closed for approximately one month so that we can prepare the building for the debate.

We have arranged for members of the university community to use 1-2-1 Fitness Center during this period. All applicable physical education classes will be relocated to 1-2-1, and Case varsity athletes will use 1-2-1 for their weight training and conditioning needs. In addition, all Case students will receive complimentary membership privileges for the fitness center from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

Case faculty and staff may purchase a $45 membership to 1-2-1 for the duration of Veale closing, and students can upgrade to unlimited use of the fitness center for the same price. The regular temporary monthly fee is $60, so this represents a 25 percent discount. For additional information regarding access to 1-2-1, please call extension 1121.

The other areas of Veale will be operational till Friday, September 17 All faculty, staff and students who use the lockers must have their items and locks removed by this date. The university will not be responsible for any damaged locks or missing items after this date.

Beginning Saturday, September 18 Veale will be closed and will reopen in stages by Friday, October 8. Varsity athletes and those students who attend class in Veale will receive proper instructions from their coach or professor where special arrangements have been made.

Adelbert Gym will be closed beginning, Thursday, September 23 and will reopen on Friday, October 8.

Campus Safety and Security

On Tuesday, October 5, heightened security on and around campus will become even more evident. Members of the campus community should visibly display their ID cards. The only people who will have access to the Case Quad and the Veale Center on this day will be those with prior approval. Access to the Veale Center, Van Horn Field, and the Lot 53 garage on this day will be limited to those attending the debate and volunteers and staff members who have special credentials. Also, deliveries on campus on the day of the debate will be limited because of this ramped-up level of security.

Anyone encountering a problem with credentials for the debate should come to Adelbert Gym between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, or Sunday, October 3, and discuss the matter directly with representatives of the Commission on Vice Presidential Debates.

Additional law enforcement agencies will be on campus, working in partnership with Case security. All faculty, staff, and students must wear their Case IDs and abide by the guidelines set forth in the Student Handbook and university policy while also respecting the special perimeters and security instructions established for the Vice Presidential Debate.
