6. Mather Dance Center

The Mather Dance Center was originally built in 1909 as a gymnasium for Flora Stone Mather College. Designed by the firm of Hubbell and Benes, architects of the West Side Market and the Cleveland Museum of Art, it replaced the original gymnasium in the attic of Clark Hall, which had become inadequate as the enrollment of the college increased. Money for the building was raised by a committee of the Board of Trustees, and the building was equipped by the alumnae. It was later converted into the Mather Dance Center where it now houses three studios, the largest being a glorious working space that converts into an informal theater. The wood flooring and sub flooring provide needed resiliency for dancers. All studios have ample windows for natural lighting and proper ventilation.
