5. Guilford House
Built in 1892 originally as a dormitory for women attending
Flora Stone Mather School for Women, it later served for many
years as the French House for summer school language programs
and as the first graduate student dormitory on the campus.
Designed by the Cleveland firm of Coburn
and Barnum, Guilford House was a gift of Flora
Stone Mather. She named it in honor of Linda Guilford,
her teacher at Cleveland Academy.
Guilford houses the departments
of English,
Modern Languages
and Literature, and Women's
Studies. Included in Modern Languages are Chinese, French,
German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. There is also
a computer writing lab on the first floor.
