12. Eldred Hall

Eldred Hall was built in 1897 when Rev. Henry B. Eldred donated $15,000 to build a YMCA for the students of Adelbert College. The building functioned as a student center complete with a snack bar, barber shop, and a second-floor meeting room for student clubs and classes. Within a year, the Sock and Buskin Club--a company of student actors--began to stage student-written revues, popular and "quick hit" comedies, and Shakespearean plays in the building. Flora Stone Mather College also had a new group of young female actors taking to the stage as the Curtain Players. In 1939 an addition was added and Eldred took on a permanent role as a theater. With a small proscenium stage and seating for 150 people, Eldred is home to the Theater department.
