5. School of Dental Medicine
The School of Dental Medicine is a professional school offering a curriculum leading to the degree Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.). Advanced post-doctoral specialty programs are also available. In an attempt to train and prepare the finest clinicians, the pre-doctoral curriculum is currently undergoing extensive revision, which will include an emphasis on integration of clinical and basic sciences, advanced restorative and esthetic techniques, leadership, and inquiry. The School of Dental Medicine was organized June 21, 1892, as the Dental Department of Western Reserve University. For the first 25 years of its existence, the school was located in downtown Cleveland. In 1917 the School of Dental Medicine became an integral part of the university, and now occupies this building adjacent to the schools of medicine and nursing and University Hospitals of Cleveland. The School of Dental Medicine is a member of the American Dental Education Association and is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (American Dental Association).
