Digital publishing combines written, visual and audio information into a dynamic and highly interactive application that can be delivered on all leading tablets and smartphones anywhere, anytime. The flexibility offered by digital publications means that these apps can be used to tell stories, teach concepts and convey information using rich and interactive content. To make use of this technology, UTech partnered with various campus organizations to create new and expanded connections through digital publishing.
The division worked with prominent researcher Dr. Jerry Silver, professor of neurosciences, to produce a digital publication depicting his groundbreaking research. The iPad app, “Respiratory Recovery,” walks the user step by step through Silver’s investigation into regenerating respiratory pathways following an injury to the spinal cord. The audience may view graphics outlining the historical timeline of spinal cord injuries, watch videos conveying life with paralysis and listen to Silver describe key research slides in his own words. With regard to his experience working with UTech, Dr. Silver says, "I am very pleased that the university has helped make my work accessible to the spinal-cord-injured community. I know that the spinal-cord-injury community appreciates this app very much because they have discussed it in various online collectives."
In an effort to provide a state-of-the-art presentation tools to assist the university in development activities, apps have been developed to showcase designs and plans for new facilities to provide in-depth details about potential worldwide initiatives. Beau Daane, the director of the Fowler Center for Sustainable Value at the Weatherhead School of Management states, "The UTech team created a digital publishing platform for us to use in our efforts to raise support for the Prizing for Business as an Agent of World Benefit. The platform proved effective at communicating our goals for the Prizing process and helped us secure our first significant financial support. We are grateful to the UTech Digital Technology Solutions and Services team for their creativity and skill in crafting such a powerful digital tool."
Other apps, such as the one featuring the The Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at The Temple – Tifereth Israel, provide a vehicle to demonstrate the new facility through a dynamic, interactive experience. Utilizing the app, university executives can walk potential donors and interested parties through the facility designs and demonstrate the application of donor names on buildings and spaces as they would appear upon the completion of construction.
UTech also partnered with the Case Western Reserve Alumni Association to create a digital, interactive version of SMART Magazine for undergraduate alumni who have graduated in the past 10 years. In application form, the magazine offers recipients a convenient alternative to the print edition. Additionally, it provides the Alumni Association with a vehicle to collect valuable metrics about which articles alumni are reading. As a result, future content can be shaped to the interests of the audience.
The MediaVision video production studio has been connected to local Public Broadcasting Service and National Public Radio affiliate WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN Ideastream through a dedicated fiber optic line that enables instant transmissions of audio and video produced at the university. An existing OneCommunity fiber line was utilized to allow three high-definition video signals and four digital audio channels to be transmitted from the studio in the Cedar Avenue Service Center to the Ideastream studios. This installation enables Case Western Reserve to transmit high-definition live and prerecorded productions to Ideastream, which is viewed on television channel WVIZ and heard on 90.3 WCPN radio throughout Northeast Ohio. Ideastream also is able to send audio and video to Case Western Reserve through one high-definition video channel and four audio channels.
Bringing new undergraduate students to the university each year is an undeniable priority, and Enrollment Management stays at the top of recruitment by using the latest technology to manage the applicant pool. UTech provided an important service by coordinating the interface between the recruitment software, Slate, and the university's enterprise Student Information System (SIS). An interface between Slate and SIS allows for applicant information and deposits to be recorded accurately, eliminates the need for manual data entry and duplication, and provides for accurate reporting and reconciliation of data between the two systems.
The Judson Manor retirement community in University Circle is playing an integral part in improving the quality and reducing the cost of healthcare by becoming the second experimental community in the Case Connection Zone. This connection enables Judson residents to videoconference with their primary care physician from their homes for routine care, follow-up care and chronic disease management.
The technology implementation was managed by University Technology, UTech. Each participating resident at Judson received fiber network upgrades to link his or her home to the Case Connection Zone gigabit network. A secure network connection was created between Judson and University Hospitals to ensure that videoconference connections would remain private.
