Course List and Requirements for Certification in Financial Management

 

CAPS courses may be taken by anyone who wishes to learn about the course topic. If desired, participants may complete the requirements for the Certificate of Achievement.

  2. Completion of at least one (1) core course. Additional core courses are counted as electives in requirement #3.

  3. Completion of at least five (5) elective courses.

  4. Score of at least 75% on the CAPS Cumulative Exam.
 

 

The ABCs of Financials at Case

This course will enable participants to develop a basic understanding of the accounting structure, system, and concepts used to manage the financial transactions and flow of money at the University on a daily basis.  In this class, participants will:
- Review basic accounting concepts and how they relate to fiscal responsibilities at CWRU
- Discuss ChartFields and how they function in the CWRU accounting system
- Define the role of the General Ledger

Effective Interpersonal Communication

This course provides an overview of core elements of communication and allows participants to informally assess their own communication skills. Participants will also gain tools for increasing their communication competency and ability to manage conflict.

Financial Reporting and Reconciling

This course introduces the three ways to run financial reports from the PeopleSoft Financials ERP system. Included during the course are recommendations for the management of financial activities at the departmental level, and best practices for reconciling monthly reports.

Financial Online Inquiries

The Financial Online Inquiry class discusses online inquiries available in the reporting database.
The procurement related online inquiries provide real time, online access to key financial documents, such as vouchers, payments, purchase orders, and requisitions.
The Ledger Inquiry not only provides a summary report for a department or a project, but also contains the features, such as download to Excel, drill down to detail transactions, etc. The Ledger Period Comparison can be used as a helpful tool for trend analysis and forecasting.

Sponsored Projects Fundamentals

This course reviews the fundamental issues of research administration, including basic issues associated with managing an award, roles and responsibilities of staff, and governing cost principles.

Purchasing at Case from A to Z

*required for access to PeopleSoft Financials Accounts Payable and eProcurement

This course reviews the various ways to purchase items and services at CWRU and when to use each (Accounts Payable, PCard, T&E Card, Internal Billing, DCard and eProcurement). The eProcurement section reviews the eProcurement module of PeopleSoft Financials, including how to submit quotes, establish a blanket PO, create a contract, enter a requisition, andinquire on a requisition.

Financials Journals

*required for access to PeopleSoft Financials General Ledger

This class reviews the General Ledger module of PeopleSoft Financials. In this hands-on class, participants will:

  • Create an event chartfield. 
  • Create a new journal (ESP Process) and use the event chartfield
  • Inquire on the journal created
  • Perform various edits (copy, delete, mass change, etc.) on the journal 
  • If needed: Review entering a spreadsheet journal

Financials Cashiering

This hands-on course reviews the procedures for managing petty cash and entering departmental deposits.

Sponsored Projects Accounting: Cost Transfer

This coursecovers the basic issues associated with managing an award, including an overview of the various reporting tools available, re-budgeting, the subcontracting process and cost sharing. Suggested Prerequisite: Sponsored Projects Accounting: Fundamentals

Sponsored Projects Accounting: Project Closeout

This course provides an overview of the process to close a sponsored project, including the financial reporting process, reports received from Sponsored Projects Accounting (SPA), and sponsor-required reports.
Suggested Prerequisite: Sponsored Projects Accounting: Fundamentals

Sponsored Projects Accounting: Project Monitoring

The workshop will cover basic issues associated with managing an award, including an overview of various reporting tools, re-budgeting, subcontracting process and cost sharing.
Suggested Prerequisites: Sponsored Projects: Fundamentals AND Financials Reporting, Reconciling, and Tools

Sponsored Projects Accounting: Proposal to Award and Pre-Award Services

This course reviews the basic processes involved with SpeedType setup in the Office of Sponsored Projects Administration, including an overview of eURF procedures, proposal submission, award documentation and subcontract agreements.
Suggested Prerequisite: Sponsored Projects Accounting: Fundamentals
