16th Annual SAC Basket Raffle - 2016

What: The Basket Raffle is coordinated by the Staff Advisory Council’s Community Service Committee. With your help, we have donated over $70,000 to area charities since 2001.

When: During the Benefits Fair, Wednesday, November 9 and Thursday, November 10th, 2016.

Where: Tinkham Veale University Center Ballroom, 2nd floor

Charity: We have chosen HandsOn Northeast Ohio as the charity recipient for this year’s Basket Raffle proceeds. Founded in 2007, HandsOn Northeast Ohio is a nonprofit organization, that makes volunteering easy through volunteer-led projects that build capacity for local organizations. In addition, a portion of ticket sales will go towards supporting Shelli Snyder and her family. Shelli held the co-chair position of the Community Service Committee and worked at CWRU for more than a decade. Shelli is co-founder of Bike Cleveland. She left the university in August of this year to raise funds for Bike Cleveland by riding her bicycle across the country to Seattle. While on her journey, she was struck by a vehicle and is currently in the intensive care unit in a Montana hospital. More information about the situation can be found here.

Basket Raffle 2015 and Care Alliance Collection

SAC Community Service presented a check for $5,000 to US Together at the December 4, 2015 Staff Advisory Council (SAC) General Meeting.  We could not have raised the funds without your help and continued support. Please enjoy the attached PowerPoint that shows the basket raffle winners.

Last year, all basket raffle proceeds were donated to US Together, a refugee resettlement agency located on the east side of Cleveland and provides help to those who are seeking refuge and are unable to stay in their native country. In addition, they provide support services, employment services, health access, ESL classes and family services.

In addition, we collected socks, gloves, hats, and oral hygiene products for Care Alliance, an organization that has been providing services to the homeless since 1985. View flyer (pdf)

This year the sale was held on two days and resulted in $1,043 in sales and donations within 4 hours.  More than 350,000 stitches were made in creating the more than 180 yarn-craft items offered for sale/donation.  We also featured a new line of crafted items including ceramics and coasters.  We were able to provide support to four causes.  Here is the breakdown:

  • $170 in checks was donated to the SAC Educational Enhancement Fund
  • $900 in cash was donated to the Cleveland Food Bank/WKYC Double Your Dollar Day Telethon, and will provide 7,200 meals!!!
  • Laura’s Home (City Mission) and St. Malachi each received 5 boxes (79 items) last Thursday, in plenty of time for distribution before Christmas!
