Apostille Document Authentication

What is an Apostille?

Apostille is a French word which means a certification. It is commonly used in English to refer to "a form of certification for documents that are for use in countries in the Hague Convention. The apostille certifies the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document is serving, and identifies the seal/stamp, which the document bears." (For more background information, see the Ohio Secretary of State web page.)

Why might you need an apostille?

An apostille may be required for a diploma, degree/enrollment verification or transcript being sent to an entity in another country. That entity may refer to the required diploma, verification and/or transcript as needing to be “certified,” “notarized” or “authenticated.” If you plan to study, teach or work abroad, the country to which you will travel may require this extra step for certifying your educational documents.

What documents are available for the apostille process?

The documents listed below are available for the apostille process. You may also make a copy of your own diploma; we will verify and authenticate this as well. Documents available for the apostille process from the University Registrar's Office vary in cost and processing time:

What are the fees for an apostille?

It depends on the level of certification required. If the country to which you want to send documents is part of the Hague Convention, documents completed with an apostille at the state level may be submitted directly to the member nation without further action. Otherwise, you may wish to request an apostille from the U.S. Department of State in addition to the state certified documents. The fees for an apostille are as follows:

  • $5 per page: School/Local fee
  • $5 per page: State of Ohio
  • $8 per page: U.S. Department of State

Processing time for each agency (may take up to 30 days total) varies, so please plan accordingly. For further information regarding fees and shipping, please see our Apostille Document Authentication form.
