Mandel School to host distinguished contributor
series lectures
The
Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences Distinguished Contributor
Series begins September 23 with a lecture by Congressman Louis Stokes.
Stokes,
whose 30-year career in the U.S. House of Representatives includes
terms as chair of the appropriations subcommittee on public housing
and veterans' affairs, will give an insider's view of the "hill."
All
discussions in the series are free or offer two continuing education
units for $15. Each is from 4-6 p.m. in Room 320 of the Mandel School.
In
addition to Stokes, the series will feature Belle Likover (SASS '69)
on November 25, Michael Walker on February 10 and Joan Southgate
on April 13.
Likover founded the Coalition to Monitor Medicare Managed
Care and heads the Council of Older Persons. Her late husband, Edward,
was
blacklisted during the McCarthy era, and she will draw similarities
between that
experience and today's political environment.
As executive director
of a partnership for a Safer Cleveland, Walker will talk about his
organization's efforts to make Cleveland
a
safer place and about his background growing up in Chicago
housing developments.
Southgate is an activist and retired social worker
who embarked on a 350-mile journey by foot to retrace her ancestors'
route
to freedom
on Ohio's Underground Railroad.
For reservations for any of
these discussions, contact Pamela Carson at 368-2281 or e-mail prc2@case.edu.
