Accolades

Case School of Engineering: Students take national honors

Amit Kumar, a doctorate student in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the Case Western Reserve University School of Engineering, has
won a prestigious scholarship from the American Society of Engineers of Indian Origin (ASEI).
Kumar, whose research is on microgravity combustion and spacecraft fire safety, received the ASEI-Kalpana Chawla Memorial Scholarship. Chawla was on of the seven astronauts who died when the space shuttle Columbia (flight STS-107) began to break up over Texas during re-entry in February.
Two other Case students also received honors at the convention: Arun Kumar, from biomedical engineering, was named graduate student of the year and Arun Kottha, from the Weatherhead School of Management, was named undergraduate of the year.

School of Medicine: Rhetta wins minority award

The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) Foundation has selected Teri L. Rhetta, a medical student at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, as the 2003 recipient of its Wilburn H. Weddington, M.D., Minority Student Award.

The $2,000 OAFP foundation award is given to encourage and support third- and fourth-year minority students who are enrolled in Ohio medical schools and planning careers in family medicine. The application process is based on interest in family practice, community service and financial need.

Weatherhead School of Management: Previts tops in accountancy

Gary Previts, professor of accountancy
and associate dean of undergraduate and integrated studies programs at the Case Western Reserve University Weatherhead School of Management, has been named to Accounting Today's "100 Most Influential in the Accounting Profession" list.

This is the second consecutive year Previts has been named to the list.

Previts has garnered several teaching and accounting awards, including the Ohio Society of CPAs' Gold Medal for Meritorial Service and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Accounting Education from the American Institute of CPAs.

College of Arts and Sciences: Barkley recognized for service

Mary Dicky Barkley, professor of biophysical chemistry at Case Western Reserve University's College of Arts and Sciences, has been honored with the distinguished service award of the Biophysics Society. Barkley has served as president of the society.
