Several dentistry students
take scholarship honors
Students at the Case Western
Reserve University School of Dentistry have garnered many scholarship honors
this year.
Among the award winners: Jeff Kwong, a fourth-year student who
received a third-place award from the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry,
and
Leonica (Shelly)
Blue, who was awarded a $1,800 Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Spouses
Educational Scholarship.
In addition, for the first time in several years,
the Ohio Dental Association Foundation has honored a Case student with a
scholarship. First-year dental
student Jason David Majors has received a $1,000 award from the ODA.
David
Hassid, also a first-year dental student, won a $1,000 scholarship from Procter
and Gamble Co. and the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation.
This
award is given to Hispanic students who excel academically and are
dedicated to community involvement.
Dental association honors Case students,
alumni
Two Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry alumni and
two current students have been recognized by the Ohio Dental Association
(ODA).
Gregory M. Beten (DDS, '93) has won the ODA's N. Wayne Hiatt
Rising Star Award. Since 1991, the Rising Star Award has been presented
to a dentist
in practice
10 or fewer years who has demonstrated outstanding leadership
and commitment to organized dentistry.
Ron Lemmo (DDS, '84) has been named president
of the ODA.
Two second-year residents in the School of Dentistry's department
of endodontics, George Brown and Michael Mindiola, won first-
and second
place awards,
respectively, for work they presented at a recent ODA conference.
Case dental students
have won at least one of these honors each year over the
past five years.
