1950s
Ken Bell (CIT ’51) received the Max Jakob Memorial Award presented jointly by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers to honor exceptional contributions to the field of heat transfer. Earlier, Ken received the Kern Award, another top honor for career achievement in heat transfer. He is the Kerr-McGee Chair emeritus and Regents Professor emeritus in Ohio State Univ.’s School of Engineering, where he retired in 2001 after a 50-year career. Ken lives in Stillwater, OK.
1960s
Judith Bluestone (FSM ’66), Freemont, WA, was one of five Washington State residents to receive a 2004 Jefferson Award for Public Service. The annual program, sponsored by the American Institute for Public Service, recognizes “ordinary people who do extraordinary things for other people, their community, their nation or the environment.” The Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper cosponsors the program. Judith overcame physical deformities to found the Handle Institute, a nonprofit organization in Seattle that uses a battery of holistic techniques to help people suffering from neurodevelopmental disabilities, attention deficit disorder, autism, and Tourette’s syndrome. Judith also received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002 from the university’s Undergraduate Alumni Assoc.
Andrew Chiodo (ADL ’67), Columbus, OH, is the founder and president of Value Positioning Development. The company is an extension of his experience as a marketing manager, advertising agency principal, and consultant. He has developed and implemented marketing and communications programs for a wide range of businesses, from small startups to some of the largest companies in the world. 1970s
Steve G. Kukla (CIT ’75) joined America Online, Inc. in Dulles, VA, as director of competitive intelligence for broadband products. He resides with his family in Reston. Steve also is a certified Hatha yoga teacher.
Heather Sowald (WRC ’76) is the new president of the Ohio State Bar Assoc. The one-year term began July 1. She and her mother, Beatrice Sowald, are entering their 25th year of practice in the Columbus-based firm, Sowald, Sowald, & Clouse. Heather and her husband, Robert Kaplan, live in Gahanna, OH, with their two children.
Rev. Charles Winkelman (WRC ’79) writes, “I finished seven years as associate pastor for youth at First Presbyterian Church in Goshen, IN, and since November 2002, am the pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Jersey Shore, PA. I survived a serious car crash on December 5, 2002; no one who saw my pickup truck could believe anybody survived it. I was saved by a seat belt, air bag, and about six angels! I am thankful God still has a purpose for me, including being a pastor, a husband to Laura (18 years), and a dad to Susanne (13) and Matthew (11). I was diagnosed with adult Attention Deficit Disorder two years ago. Nice to find out there was a reason for all those all-nighter cram sessions in college. Kuntoro W. Nurtanio (WRC ’85), Cleveland, writes, “A few alumni of universities in the Cleveland area have set up an Assoc. for Alumni of Universities in Cleveland. More than 100 alumni of Case, Cleveland State Univ., and Cuyahoga Community College, and other universities in the Cleveland area have registered to join this association. Nanette Barkey (WRC ’87) writes, “I have completed my Ph.D. in anthropology and am the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Pomona College. My husband, Hilton Vasconcelos, and I live in Claremont, [CA], with our black Labrador.” E-mail nanette.barkey@pomona.edu.
Michael Specht (WRC ’87) is the new chair of the board of trustees for HOBY, the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership, a nonprofit training program for high school students. He’s been involved with HOBY since 1981. Additionally, Michael is an associate lawyer with Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox in Washington, D.C. He lives in Silver Spring, MD, with wife Jalena, a former ambassador for HOBY.

Eric Matyac (CWR ’94), Medina, OH, writes, “After I was married to Jennifer Brown in August 2002, we went to Zurich, Switzerland, for four months, where I studied finance and real options as part of an M.B.A. from Ohio State Univ. After returning, I finished my degree and started a management consulting business for the summer. In the fall, I accepted a position at AirNet Systems. We recently made an addition to our family, a lab, border collie mix.” Eric is chapter advisor for Beta Eta of Sigma Chi at Case. He needs ideas for an appropriate 95th-year celebration.
