American Studies

Kenneth H. Seward (’78) is headmaster of the Steward School, an independent day school in Richmond, VA. Kenneth previously was head of the Roeper School in Bloomfield Hills, MI. He is married and has two sons.

Biometry

Edmund Higgins (’83, MED ’84), Sullivans Island, SC, has launched a website that explores the criminal justice system, namely persons falsely convicted of crime and later proven innocent. “I began compiling a database in 1997. This database now contains 360 people who were innocent yet convicted of crime; some were sentenced to death.” Edmund says he does this partly to help in his own practice of diagnosing and treating patients, but also with the hopes that information in the database will help prevent errors in the criminal justice system. Pathology

Nicholas Ziats (’87), Olmsted Falls, OH, was one of four Case School of Medicine faculty members to receive the Kaiser-Permanente Awards for Excellence in Teaching at the school’s May 16 diploma ceremony. Nicholas is an associate professor of pathology, with appointments in the anatomy and biomedical engineering depts.

Physics

William Bassichis (’61, ’64), College Station, TX, is the inaugural Presidential Professor at Texas A&M Univ. The title, granted for life, is awarded to only two professors a year. It carries a stipend of $25,000. The award recognizes excellence in teaching. He is the author of a series of undergraduate physics books entitled Don’t Panic. Before joining the faculty at Texas A&M, he taught at MIT and did research at the Weizmann Institute in Israel, the Nuclear Center in Saclay, France, and the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory.

Political Science

Yvonne Williams (’82), Wooster, OH, was among 12 women inducted into the 2003 Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame. The state honor cites Yvonne for her former role as dean of faculty and founder and longtime director of the black studies program at the College of Wooster. She is the Hampton and Esther Boswell Distinguished University Professor of Black Studies at DePauw Univ. in Greencastle, IN.

Theater

Nina Nelson (‘78), Kalamazoo, MI, is chair of the Dept. of Dance at Western Michigan Univ., where she also is a professor of dance. Nina joined the WMU faculty in 1982 as director of the Modern Dance Program. She is an accreditation site visitor for the National Assoc. of Schools of Dance, and a member of the Michigan Dance Council, Motus Humanis, and the Laban Institute for Movement Studies.
