ALUMNI HOUSE

...loadingThe university will soon boast a splendid new home devoted to and designed for all alumni.

Alumni House will be a place to meet, network, socialize, conduct business, interact with the campus community, and engage in other activities. Bolstered by a firm commitment from the Board of Trustees and President Edward M. Hundert, this welcoming and useful facility is now close to becoming reality. President Hundert envisions Alumni House as a focal point where proud graduates assemble throughout the year to participate in the life of their alma mater, sharing knowledge and experiences with students, rekindling friendships with classmates and professors, and helping to chart the university’s future.

School of Law alumnus Daniel T. Clancy (LAW ’62), special assistant to the vice-president for university relations, is spearheading the ongoing campaign for Alumni House. A longtime proponent of the concept, Mr. Clancy has been generating support—financial and otherwise—to move the project forward. A total of $10 million will activate design and construction. As of press time, the campaign had received more than $5.6 million in cash and pledges from alumni and friends.

Alumni House also has become a focus for the Alumni Task Force that is now creating a bold new alumni organization to serve all university graduates. Alumni, students, staff, and other stakeholders are working together to mold an organization that meets the needs and interests of all alumni and provides them with opportunities to play a key role in the university’s destiny.

Just what will this long-awaited Alumni House look like? Plans call for it to stand on Euclid Avenue as part of the University Commons, an area at the heart of campus that includes the historic Mather Quad, Thwing Center, Kelvin Smith Library, Severance Hall, and, soon, the new Campus Center. Among the proposed amenities are:

• Business center and office space
• Meeting and conference rooms
• Library
• Pub and dining area
• Great Room accommodating up to 200
• An alumni “Wall of Fame”
• An area for historical and alumni memorabilia
• Office space for alumni relations staff
• Nearby parking.

Alumni visiting the city and the campus will use Alumni House for business and social functions; as a place of respite or to refresh oneself between conference sessions, meetings, or class reunions; to enjoy drinks or a meal with friends and associates; or to read in the library or access the university’s wireless network.

Mr. Clancy and his colleagues are committed to making Alumni House a topnotch facility. For more information about the project, including giving opportunities, refer to the Alumni House Campaign card in this issue of the magazine.
