CWRU remains Ohio's top university in overall academic excellence in undergraduate programs, according to the latest rankings from U.S. News and World Report magazine.
The magazine also ranked undergraduate programs in engineering and business in overall excellence, as well as excellence in specific disciplines. The Department of Biomedical Engineering, based in the Case School of Engineering, ranks fourth nationally.
In overall undergraduate academic excellence, the magazine ranks CWRU 38th among the country's top 228 national universities. The magazine based its rankings on 16 measures of academic excellence, focusing on areas such as academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, alumni giving, and financial resources.
At CWRU, 50 percent of undergraduate classes have under 20 students, only 15 percent of classes enroll 50 or more students, the student-faculty ratio is 8:1, 97 percent of faculty are full-time, and the freshman retention rate is 91 percent. The middle 50 percent of SAT scores for fall 1999 freshman ranged from 1220-1440, and 67 percent of members of the fall 1999 freshman class were in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
The magazine also ranked undergraduate engineering and business programs. CWRU's business program ranks 21st nationally (tied with six other schools), and the University's engineering program ranks 35th (tied with five other schools).
The magazine divided engineering schools into those with Ph.D. programs, and those without. CWRU's rankings are among engineering schools with Ph.D. programs.
