Taub to perform Beethoven sonatas

Internationally acclaimed pianist Robert Taub, who the New Yorker magazine called "a visionary virtuoso," will perform piano sonatas by Beethoven in a series of three recitals at CWRU.

The recitals are scheduled for three Tuesday evenings -- October 5, October 26, and November 9 -- in Harkness Chapel. Taub will give a pre-concert lecture at 7 p.m. each evening. The concerts will begin at 8 p.m.

The October 5 recital features the vibrant "Waldstein" sonata, the second program includes the epic "Hammerklavier", and the final concert will feature the "Pathetique" and the sonata in A-flat, Opus 110.

WCLV-FM 95.5 will broadcast all three recitals live.

Taub also will coach three master classes in Harkness Chapel. The classes will begin at 10:30 a.m. the day after each recital, and will feature advanced students from CWRU's music department and the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Admission to the concerts is free, but seating is limited, and tickets are required. Call 368-2414.

Taub is a leader in the new generation of virtuoso pianists. Reflecting his continuing interest in contemporary music, he recently performed the world premiere of Milton Babbitt's Concerto No. 2 at Carnegie Hall with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

He has appeared in the Great Performers series at Lincoln Center, and has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Last year he made his Cleveland debut at Harkness Chapel.

Artist-in-residence at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, since 1994, Taub is the first musician to be so recognized in the institute's 65-year history. T.S. Eliot was the only other artist-in-residence, in 1948

The Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities is sponsoring these recitals.
