CLEVELAND -- The School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University will host a media-scientist roundtable framed around a report titled Worlds Apart: How the Distance Between Science and Journalism Threatens America's Future. The event is from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, October 18 in lecture hall E401 at the School of Medicine.
Roundtable participants will be members of the CWRU faculty -- Jessica Berg, assistant professor of law and biomedical ethics; Karl Herrup, professor of neurosciences and neurology and director of the University Alzheimer Center, and Joseph Nadeau, professor of human genetics -- and members of the media -- John Mangels, science writer, The Plain Dealer; Monica Robins, health reporter, WKYC-TV3; and Raquel Santiago, medical writer, Crain's Cleveland Business.
Congressman Sherrod Brown (Ohio, D-13) and Nathan Berger, dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs at CWRU, will make introductory remarks. The moderator will be Jim Hartz, former host of NBC's "Today Show" and co-author of the Worlds Apart report. He will be joined by report co-author Rick Chappell, a former NASA physicist.
The roundtable is presented by the dean's office and the public affairs office at the School of Medicine, and Research!America, a nonprofit, bi-partisan research advocacy organization. A reception will follow the event.
