Bach and Lawry to teach courses for religious studies institute

CLEVELAND -- Case Western Reserve University faculty members Alice Bach and Robert Lawry are among the teachers leading class discussions on religious and ethical topics for fall courses offered by the Cleveland Ecumenical Institute for Religious Studies at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 2747 Fairmont Boulevard.

Delilah, Salome, Bathsheba, and Eve are a few women who sinned or defied the plans of God. These women and others are the topic of the course, "Wicked Women of the Bible," taught by Bach, CWRU's Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan Associate Professor of Catholic Studies. The class meets from 9-11 a.m. Saturdays from October 7 through November 11. The course fee is $75.

Bach, a scholar of biblical literature and director of CWRU's Women's Studies Program, is the author of Women, Seduction and Betrayal in Biblical Narrative and the award-winning editor of Women and the Hebrew Bible.

Lawry's topic is "The Moral Duty in the Face of Unjust Law." The course will meet from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Mondays from September 25 through November 13. It will explore questions of civil disobedience and the duty to obey unjust laws. The class will use classic texts as well as film clips from Crito, Antigone, The Merchant of Venice, Billy Budd, Letter from a Birmingham Jail, and other essays and plays as the basis for class discussion. The course fee is $100.

Two other classes are on the institute's fall schedule. Rev. Reid Isaac, dean of the Cleveland Ecumenical Institute, will teach "Listening for God: Contemporary Literature and the Life of Faith" from 7:30-9:30 p.m. September 27 through November 1. The course fee is $75.

Fr. George Smiga, pastor of St. Noel Parish in Willoughby Hills, will present "Getting the Message of Paul the Apostle," from 9-11 a.m. September 23 through November 11. The course fee is $100.

Both of these courses will meet at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 15700 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood.

The registration deadline is September 18. For information, contact Barbara Driscol at 440-247-8568.
