Observatory hosts open house

Interested in getting a closer look at the galaxy? Case Western Reserve University's Department of Astronomy will open the doors to its Nassau Astronomical Station next week. The observatory is at 10317 Clay Street, located 35 miles east of campus and north of Mayfield Road in Geauga County.

The annual fall public night at the observatory is from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday, October 8. In case of rain or heavy cloud cover, the event will take place Saturday, October 8 during the same time. The department will post the event's status on the Web at http://astrwww.cwru.edu by 5 p.m. each night.

Nassau houses one of three telescopes that are part of CWRU's Warner & Swasey Observatory. Visitors can view distant space objects through the University's 0.9-meter reflector telescope. Other University telescopes are found in the dome atop the A.W. Smith Building on the Case Quad and at Kitt Peak, Arizona.

The reflector telescope is equipped to operate as a robotic instrument, controlled from campus during winter months when the station is inaccessible. The public can make requests online for the telescope to view and record specific images of objects in the night sky. Visit http://astrwww.astr.cwru.edu/interface.html to use the telescope via the Web.

Reservations are needed, because parking is limited to 35 vehicles at the Nassau Station. For reservations, contact Linda Day in the astronomy department at 368-3728 or lmd3.
