Mullins becomes tech director

Case Western Reserve University has named Martin A. Mullins the director of technology management at the University's School of Medicine. Mullins comes to CWRU from the Harvard Medical School, where he held various positions in the areas of technology transfer, licensing, and development.

At CWRU, Mullins will work closely with Nathan A. Berger, dean of the medical school; Robert Shakno, vice dean and associate vice president for medical affairs; and Linton Salmon, the University's vice president of technology transfer.

"We are delighted to have Martin joining us," said Shakno. "He represents an important step in our ongoing program of strengthening the medical school's and the University's program of technology transfer."

Mullins was acting director of the Harvard Medical School's Office of Technology Licensing and Industry Sponsored Research, and prior to that was senior technology licensing manager. In those positions he developed the medical school's intellectual property strategy, and negotiated and executed licensing and industry-sponsored research agreements. Since February, he has been director of development planning at the Harvard Medical School.

Earlier, he had been a marketing executive and then sales manager of BioResearch Ireland, a project executive for the Industrial Development Authority of Ireland, and a hospital specialist for Eli Lilly and Co.

A native of Ireland, Mullins holds a master of science degree from University College Cork and has attended advanced-level management courses at Harvard Business School and the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Commercialized technology developed at CWRU has resulted in a number of corporate start-ups, such as Athersys Inc., Copernicus Gene Systems, NeuroControl Corp., and Osiris Therapeutics Inc. The University also has entered into collaborative agreements with numerous other companies to support research that may lead to commercialization.
