CLEVELAND -- The Department of Theater Arts opens its 2000-01 production season with Moliere's classic comedy, The Misanthrope, directed by theater arts faculty member Jerrold Scott. The cast, comprised of graduate and undergraduate CWRU students, will perform the play in Eldred Theater at 8 p.m. October 13-14 and 19-21, with 2:30 p.m. matinees October 15 and 22.
The production staff includes guest artists Michael Roesch for set and lighting design and Teresa Pieritz for costume design. Joseph Fahey from CWRU's theater arts department will serve as dramaturg.
The Misanthrope receives a clever update from British poet and translator Tony Harrison. He takes the play, originally set in 1666 during the court of Louis XIV, and places it in the "reign" of General Charles de Gaulle in 1966. The comedy follows the exploits of a socialite and her hypocrisy-hating beau as they navigate the pitfalls of elite Paris. This brilliant satire exposes the snobbery, double-dealing, and self-righteousness lurking in the human condition.
General admission is $9, with discounted prices of $7 for CWRU faculty and staff as well as adults over age 60, and $5 for students. For ticket reservations and information, call the box office at 368-6262.
