Live awardees have CWRU ties

CLEVELAND -- Several finalists in Northern Ohio Live magazine's annual Awards of Achievement issue have a Case Western Reserve University connection. The awards coverage appears in the magazine's October issue.

CWRU is part of a consortium -- the Advanced Liquid Crystal Optical Materials (ALCOM) Science and Technology Center -- which won the award in the science and technology category. Also in the consortium are Kent State University (where the center is housed) and the University of Akron. Since its 1990 creation, the center has received nearly 20 patents and has licensed technology developed there to industrial partners nationwide.

Also in the science and technology category, Robert Savinell was a finalist for his work on developing a prototype of a miniature fuel cell, using high-tech micro-fabrication techniques. The new miniature fuel cell could be used commercially in everything from automobiles to cell phones and computers.

Joanne Eustis, director of the University Library, was a finalist in the film category, sharing the honors with several others for their work in obtaining funds to keep intact a collection of 6,500 classic films when a Cleveland Heights video story closed last fall. CWRU department chairs Carroll Pursell in history, Suzanne Ferguson in English, and Marie Pierre LeHir in modern languages and literatures joined Eustis in what the magazine called a "rescue mission" to keep the video collection intact, along with David Deming, president of the Cleveland Institute of Art. They group purchased the collection of Tony Whitehouse's Storytape Video store. Several CWRU faculty members had been using the store's videotapes for classroom presentations.

Jim Gilliland, a 20-year veteran at WRUW 91.1 FM, was a finalist in the radio and TV category for his weekly show. Using the on-air name "Cousin Jimmie Wilson," he hosts the three-hour "Roll Away the Dew" program on Saturday mornings, featuring a variety of music from blues and folk to Western swing and bluegrass. Gilliland is a technical sales specialist for IBM's e-business solutions area.
