CLEVELAND -- Social Security and Medicare are two of the most hotly contended issues in the current presidential campaign. Barbara Kennelly, former deputy commissioner for retirement policy at the Social Security Administration and a nine-term congresswoman, will speak about "Social Security and Medicare -- Election 2000 Counts!" at Case Western Reserve University at 5 p.m. Tuesday, October 17 in 306 Clark Hall. Her presentation is free and open to the public.
Kennelly's talk is the annual Kathryn Peacock Eaken Lecture on Women in Politics. The Eaken Lecture honors the Pepper Pike councilwoman who entered politics at the age of 62 and continued to serve for 16 years.
Kennelly will speak from her extensive experience with both policy substance and political decision-making. Upon her arrival in Congress in 1982, the Connecticut Democrat saw that there were no women on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, so she campaigned for and won a seat on that committee, which oversees Social Security, Medicare, and the tax code.
She also was the first woman to become a member of the House Intelligence Committee, and the first to serve as a deputy majority whip of the House. As deputy commissioner of Social Security, Kennelly worked to analyze and develop information pertaining to social insurance, financing, and economic policy.
Sponsoring this year's Eaken Lecture are CWRU's Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities and the Center for Policy Studies.
