Goldberg named dentistry dean

Jerold S. Goldberg, interim dean of Case Western Reserve University's School of Dentistry since January 1, was appointed dean of the school October 18 by the CWRU Board of Trustees on the recommendation of President Agnar Pytte.

"Provost (Richard) Zdanis and I have great confidence in Jerry Goldberg's ability to build on the progress the school has made in recent years," Pytte said. "His responses in our discussions about issues and concerns facing the school have been thoughtful, affirmative, and forward-looking, and he has committed himself to a course of action that will lead to an even stronger School of Dentistry."

While serving as interim dean, Goldberg oversaw much of the school's most recent reaccreditation process, which concluded this summer in the conferral of approval status for all the school's programs.

The accreditation review led to several significant changes, including an increase in class size from 62 to 70 and an increase in faculty size and strength. The faculty expansion is expected to enhance the school's research capacity as well. (See accompanying article.)

An upsurge in applications to the dental school that began in l991 has continued under Goldberg. From a low of 466 applications in 1990, the applications for this fall's first year class rose to 2,430 -- a 10.4 percent increase over the previous year.

Along with his teaching and administrative responsibilities, Goldberg has kept up his international volunteer work, which over the years has included medical missions to Nepal, Ecuador, and Lithuania.

In May, he made his fourth mission to Lithuania to perform reconstructive facial surgeries and train medical personnel. While there, the City Hospital of Klaipeda dedicated a new oral and maxillofacial unit named in honor of Goldberg and John DiStefano, a clinical professor at the School of Dentistry.

A 1970 alumnus of the school, Goldberg joined the faculty in l974 after completing a dental internship at Newark Beth Israel Hospital in New Jersey and a three-year oral surgery residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland. He was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 1980 and to professor in l992.

As chair of the school's oral and maxillofacial surgery department since 1985, Goldberg has developed a nationally acclaimed program that enables residents to earn a certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery and an M.D. degree in five years. The dual-degree program is offered in cooperation with the CWRU School of Medicine and University Hospitals of Cleveland.

Goldberg is a diplomate in the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), a fellow in the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and a fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has served on the ABOMS advisory committee and on behalf of the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation.

Goldberg succeeds Lawrence I. Goldblatt, who left the dean's post at the end of December to become the dental dean at Indiana University, where he had spent 23 years before joining CWRU in January 1994.
