Faculty Art Show opens September 15 at Mather Gallery

CLEVELAND -- Artwork by faculty members in the Art Education and Art Studio Program will open the gallery's 2000-01 season. The exhibit opens at 5 p.m. Friday, September 15 with an artists' reception. The Faculty Art Show, free and open to the public, continues through October 6. Viewing hours are noon to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Eight faculty members will feature their photographs, paintings, enamel work, jewelry, weavings, drawings, and ceramics. The exhibit showcases the following artists:

Al Aiken, who teaches beginning photography and color photography, combines the mediums of conventional and digital photography, printmaking, drawing, and painting. He has exhibited his work in such shows as the National Copier Art Exhibition, Graphic Center, New York; State Museum, Albany, New York; and the International Society of Copier Artist. His work is among the permanent collections at the Erie Art Museum and Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina.
Professional photographer Gail Berg began teaching photography at CWRU in 1981. Her work has appeared in the Cleveland Museum of Art's May Show and the New Gallery of Contemporary Art, as well as many private collections. In addition to teaching, she engages in art consulting and commissions through her firm, Berg & Associates, Inc.
Margaret Fischer is an award-winning artist and craftsperson for her work in vitreous enamel, metal, and polymer clay. She exhibits and sells her work in galleries throughout the United States, and has had her work featured in Ceramics Monthly, Crafts Horizons, and Ecclesiastical Crafts. She joined the faculty in 1974 and teaches enameling and jewelry.
Martha Lois, who joined the faculty this year to teach ceramics, has worked as a studio potter for several decades, focusing on functional and decorative stoneware and occasional sculptures.
Christopher Pekoc, who has taught creative drawing since 1988, stitches together complex collages of materials and photographs. Pekoc's work has appeared in more than 105 solo and group shows, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Australia, the Ueda Gallery in Tokyo, and various galleries in New York City. His work also is in collections at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Ringling Museum (Sarasota, Florida).
Luba Slodov employs photo transfers, crocheted wire, weaving, and various textile techniques in her art work and shares those talents with students in classes on the subjects of design, color, weaving, fibers, and textile. Her work also is in the permanent collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art, as well as a large-scale tapestry for Suburban Temple in Beachwood.
Architect Kurt Weaver from AKW Inc. teaches CWRU's architecture and design courses. He received his B.Arch. and B.S. in architecture from Kent State University. Recently students from his classes were invited to submit two projects to the Temporary Shelters Exhibit at the Here Here Gallery in Cleveland.
Tim Shuckerow, director of the Art Education and Art Studio Program, expresses his creativity through painting, mask-making, ceramic sculpture, collage, and graphics. His collage and mask work has been selected for exhibition in several national juried art shows, Cleveland Museum of Art's May Shows, and the Canton Art Museum. Shuckerow received two public commissions to create a 140-foot Bicentennial Mural and the Little Italy Good Neighbor Mural in Cleveland.

Other shows scheduled at the Mather Gallery this year are "African-American and Latino Stories" by Frank Diaz-Escalet, October 13-November 10; the Annual Holiday Sale, November 17-December 22; "Art as a Life Force" by Ralph Bell, January 16-February 16; and mixed-media works by Daniel David Ross, April 6-May 18.
