CWRU continuing ed dishes up a menu of fall courses

CLEVELAND -- It's a smorgasbord of courses this fall at Case Western Reserve University, as the Office of Continuing Education at CWRU opens registration for its non-degree classes. The menu includes plenty of non-caloric choices guaranteed to spare the waistline, but enrich the mind. Programs are Senior Scholars, Off-Campus Studies, Scholars in the Circle, and Creative Writing.

Senior Scholars can chose from three courses: "Flicks vs. Footlight," a comparison of screen and stage artists; "Violence and Sex in the Middle Ages," a look at that period's heroes and the meaning of faith, honor, and loyalty; and "Origins of Political Thought," analyses of theorists such as Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Marx.

The Off-Campus Studies' menu is full of thought-nourishing classes in art, classics, government, history, literature, drama, poetry, essays, novels, religion and philosophy, social issues, and music. These classes will meet in neighborhood homes, churches, community centers, and libraries in Cuyahoga and Geauga Counties.

The University and nearby cultural institutions will provide a music and art platter for a feast of "Verdi: The Man Who Made Opera 'Operatic'" at the Cleveland Music School Settlement, "The Nine Symphonies of Beethoven: Music You Thought You Knew" at Severance Hall, and "A Closer Look: Great Masters in the Cleveland Museum of Art" at the museum.

The fall specials in the Creative Writing Program are "Poetry Writing," "Intuitive Expression," "Personal Essay Writing," and "Recovering the Lost Art of Letter Writing."

Course times and dates vary for each program series. Classes begin as early as the week of September 10. For registration information and a fall course schedule, call the Office of Continuing Education at 216-368-2090 or visit their offices at 103 Guilford House, 11112 Bellflower Road on the CWRU campus.
