OCTOBER 2007 UPDATE

 

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Congress continued to struggle with passage of FY2008 appropriations measures with the Senate focusing on the farm bill and confirmation hearings of Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey and the House directing it s attention to free trade and tax extenders.

Appropriations and Budget –An update on the status of FY08 appropriations bills and an early peak at how some members are beginning to try to influence the FY09 budget.

Higher Education – With little progress made another extension for the Higher Education Act is enacted and the Department of education releases final rules for student loan programs.

Homeland Security – Recent developments on the Department’s dangerous chemicals inventory program.

NASA – The agency rolls out a revised lunar exploration architecture and a boost to astronomy research.

National Institutes of Health – Updates on agency guidelines for grant funding under a FY08 Continuing Resolution and recent changes at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

Research – The National Research Council releases a report entitled focusing on the importance of balancing scientific openness with security concerns.

Taxes – House Ways & Means Chairman Charles Rangel introduces tax reform legislation that includes provisions affecting higher education.

Odds and Ends – Miscellaneous items of interest.

Comings and Goings – Resignations, appointments, deaths.

STATE OF OHIO

Electric Utility Re-regulation – Senate passes S.B. 221, a comprehensive energy regulation plan, that moves to the House for consideration.

Higher Education – Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut begins to reveal hints about Ohio’s master plan for higher education.

Comings and Goings – Resignations, appointments, deaths.

Locally – Professor David Matthiesen testifies before the Ohio Senate Committee on Energy and Public Utilities and the Fifth Annual Louis Stokes Leadership Symposium featuring California Congresswoman Maxine Waters will be held on November 26.
