JANUARY 2008 UPDATE

 

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Members of Congress returned to the nation’s capitol to begin the second session of the 110th Congress. The major legislative initiative for the month was creation of an economic stimulus package to be enacted into law.

Appropriations and Budget –A recap of the FY2008 omnibus appropriations bill, news on the FY08 Supplemental package, and a peak at the FY09 budget to be introduced on February 4.

Higher Education – The House Committee on Education and Labor and their staff made final adjustments, through amendments, to bring the HEA Reauthorization legislation, H.R. 4137 to a floor vote in February.

NASA – Updates on the shuttle program, Hubble Telescope, and the Moon-to-Mars initiative.

National Institutes of Health – Open access on Pub-Med becomes mandatory, recent developments on conflict of interest policy, and the agency releases its FY08 fiscal policy for grant awards.

National Science Foundation – The National Science Board releases a report that addresses US competitiveness and workforce policy.

Taxes/Endowments – The Senate Finance Committee requests over 130 colleges and universities to submit information about their endowment, tuition, and student aid policies and procedures.

Odds and Ends – Miscellaneous items of interest.

Comings and Goings – Resignations, appointments, deaths.

STATE OF OHIO

General Assembly – Democrats shake up their Senate leadership team.

Operating Budget – Governor Strickland announces a potential operating budget shortfall and related government cost-savings measures.

Board of Regents – Rep. Shawn Webster (R-53) introduces HB 38a, a re-appropriation and technical correction bill that provides minor changes to Board of Regents funding in the FY2008-09 operating budget.
