APRIL 2008 UPDATE

 

WASHINGTON, D.C.–Congress focused on reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, the FY2008 supplemental budget bill, and the FY2009 budget resolution and passed the Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act. 

Appropriations and Budget –An update on progress of the FY2008 supplemental budget bill and the FY2009 budget resolution. 

Defense – The Senate Armed Forces Committee works on Defense reauthorization and includes increases in budget authorization for science and technology. 

Energy – The Department of Energy announces a new research center program. 

Higher Education –Recent developments on student loan legislation, international student learning outcomes, graduate students’ collective bargaining rights, and Higher Education Act reauthorization.

Homeland Security – Changes for individuals with F1 visa regulations transitioning to H-1B visas. 

NASA – An update on Shuttle missions. 

National Institutes of Health –The agency publishes a notice requesting comments on its open access policy in the Federal Register.

Patent Reform –An update on the status of Senate patent reform legislation.

Research – An advisory committee to DHHS issues a report on oversight of genetic testing.

Taxes – A summary of tax legislation affecting universities.

STATE OF OHIO

Governor Strickland, Speaker Jon Husted and Senate President Bill Harris introduce bipartisan economic stimulus plan for Ohio.

Higher EducationOhio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut releases his statewide strategic plan for higher education to the Governor and General Assembly.
