Role of the Committee
The University Plan Steering Committee serves as a point of coordination for planning activities at the institution, including in the College and Schools, in administrative areas, and at the University-wide level. Its membership includes people from all major areas of the institution, selected for their understanding of the issues and opportunities in their own areas and potential links with other areas.
The committee does not have decision-making authority, but is rather advisory to the Provost, who leads the planning process and chairs the committee, and through the Provost to the President. While the committee will review planning documents submitted by the College and the Schools, it does not direct school-level planning, but rather is charged with helping the University develop plans that will advance academic and administrative programs across the campus.
The Provost makes appointments to the Steering Committee with advice from the Deans, from the Faculty Senate and the Staff Advisory Council, and from the Office of Student Affairs. Faculty, staff, and students are selected to ensure that the planning process has the benefit of perspectives drawn from all major areas of the University, and they are expected to promote communication with their constituencies. While the Steering Committee consisted almost entirely of administrators in its early form (2003-05), its membership was broadened in early 2006 and has continued to grow to reflect the evolving needs of the planning process.
Staff support for the Steering Committee is provided by Susan Karaba, Executive Assistant to the Provost. Richard Baznik, Director of the Institute for the Study of the University in Society, serves as a member and also works closely with the Provost to manage the planning process.

- Role of the Working Group
The University Plan Working Group functions as a subcommittee of the University Plan Steering Committee, for which it provides a more compact forum for discussion and serves as a review and referral mechanism. Specifically, the Working Group evaluates information submitted to the Steering Committee, frames issues for consideration by the full Committee, and recommends to the full Committee approaches to the issues and opportunities identified in the planning process. The Working Group’s output is directed entirely to the Steering Committee, and it does not issue reports independently. The members of the Working Group are appointed by the Provost, who also chairs the Working Group.
