Information for January 2012 Graduates
If you are planning on graduating in January, 2012, please double check your AA report to make sure that everything says "all satisfied".
Reasons your AR report may not indicate everything is all satisfied include:
- Missing writing portfolio- If you have not yet started this process, information on what you need to do to hand in your portfolio can be found here.
- You have a class exception and you are currently in that class. The exception will not appear is SIS until you have a final grade in the class.
- You need to submit an AR correction form.
If your plans have changed and you are no longer planning on graduating in January, please contact the UGS office so your SIS record can be updated to ensure that you can register for the spring semester.
Midterm Grades and Where to Find them in SIS!
Faculty will be submitting grades by October 24. You will be able to find them in SIS in the student center. Pasted below is a screen shot of where you will find your mid-term grades. The mid-term grades tab will appear once midterms are posted.
Remember that mid-term grades are not official grades and will not appear on your transcript. They are provided to give you an indication of where you stand in the class at this time. This is a good time to honestly reflect on your academic progress and see if you need to make any changes to your class attendance, study strategies, time-management strategies, etc. In many cases, you may still have time to make some positive changes.
Changing an Incomplete Grade
If you received grades of I (incomplete) for any courses from the spring semester, you are expected to make the work up as quickly as possible. The latest deadline by which work must be completed and grade reported is Friday, November 11. Petitions for extensions may be considered by the Deans Committee in the Office of Undergraduate Studies only in cases where there are valid extenuating circumstances and a petition with appropriate supporting documentation (usually a letter from your instructor supporting the extension) has been submitted prior to November 11. Incompletes not completed by the deadline and for which no extension has been approved, will be converted to an F.
Pass No/Pass Policy and Date Change
Last month's newsletter outlined the policy changes and new deadline for P/NP. You can review it again here. Remember that the new date to submit a P/NP Ballot is November 11 by 5pm. It is also the last day to withdraw from a class.
The policy basically comes down to this:
- You need to be enrolled in at least 3 semester hours for an evaluative grade (in addition to the class you are taking P/NP)
- The course cannot be one required for your major, minor, or SAGES requirement, with the following caveat, if it is a required course, you can use the P/NP option, but you will not be able to use that class to fulfill a requirement and will need to take the class again for an evaluative grade.
- It cannot be used for a class that you are already taking as a repeated course
- Students majoring in any Weatherhead School of Management major (accounting or management) may not use the Pass/No Pass option for any Weatherhead School of Management courses (ACCT, BAFI, BLAW, ENTP, LHRP, MGMT, MIDS, MKMR, OPMT, ORBH, OPRE, PLCY), either required or elective.

Final Exams- Verify Your Schedule Now
Please verify your final exam schedule now. Make sure that all of your travel plans are after your final exams. You can find the Final Exam dates here. You should also consult your syllabi for all of your classes.
Students are not required to take more than two final examinations on a single day. A student who has three final exams scheduled for a single day or two exams scheduled at the same time, should contact Dean Wolcowitz in the Office of Undergraduate Studies, Sears 357 or 368-2928 for assistance.
Maintaining Academic Good Standing
As you probably know the new academic standing rules went into effect at the beginning of this semester. In order to be in good standing at the end of a semester, you must earn at least 12 hours and a 2.000 gpa for that semester. All of the new changes can be seen here.
Completing Your SAGES writing portfolio
If you have completed your first seminar and both of your university seminars, you should have or *should* be submitting your writing portfolio. Visit the SAGES portfolio web site for details on how and when you must submit your portfolio. Please don't wait until the last minute. Experience has shown that when students procrastinate handing this in, there hard drive inevitably dies or they lose papers, etc. Don't cause yourself undue stress ...complete it now!

HELP....How Do I Start My Paper?!?
Do you have a writing assignment for one of your classes and don't have a clue where to begin? Are you having a hard time organizing your paper? The SAGES Peer Writing Crew or Writing Resource Center can help!
The SAGES Peer Writing Crew assists undergraduate students at any stage of the writing process, whether generating ideas, composing a first draft, revising, or responding to an instructor's comments.
Crew members meet with students individually at several locations across campus, including Wade Commons, KSL, SAGES Cafe, and ESS. You can make an appointment through TutorTrac at least 24 hours in advance of your visit or try for a walk-in appointment during office hours.

Submit your paper electronically and ask for a Crew member's feedback. Just send your paper as an email attachment, along with (1) the complete prompt from your professor, (2) the due date for the paper, and (3) a note telling us which elements of the paper we should focus on. Do you want help with your thesis, organization, sentence structure, grammar, or something else? Please type your full name in the subject line and include it in the attachment as well. We usually respond to papers in 24-48 hours, but if the dropbox is full, we may need more time.
The Writing Resource Center (WRC) provides supplemental, discipline-specific writing instruction to students of all levels at the university. Our writing consultants work one-on-one with students on a wide variety of projects. We encourage visits from students at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming and drafting, to revising and organizing, to sharpening expression. While we also work with students on issues of mechanics and grammar, we are not a proofreading service. Our consultants work collaboratively with students to assist them in becoming better writers.

Discussions: Submit your Research or Paper for Publication!
Discussions is a peer reviewed research journal at Case Western Reserve University. It features research papers, review articles, and scholarly essays written by undergraduate students from any field. Its primary aims are to foster academic dialogue and to provide an opportunity for undergraduates to publish their scholarly work. Deadline for submission is October 21. For instructions on how to submit your paper, please visit the Discussions website.
There will be two Intersections again this year! That's right... SOURCE Symposium & Poster Session will be December 9, 2011 and April 20, 2012 this year.
The registration deadline is Nov. 4, 2011 and information can be found on the SOURCE website. We especially encourage January graduates and fall semester capstone students to participate. Please contact Sheila Pedigo or Bethany Pope if you have questions

Support Your Fellow Student Athletes

University Community Hour
The University Community Hour is scheduled every Friday during the fall and spring semesters from 12:30 to 2 p.m. No required academic activities of any type may be scheduled during this period. The University Community Hour facilitates student and faculty attendance at campus-wide gatherings and special events, especially those that foster community building at Case Western Reserve University. See the schedule for more information on topics and locations.
Public Affairs Discussion Groups
The Center for Policy Studies at Case hosts a public affairs discussion group Friday's at 12:30 pm in the Inamori Center in Crawford Room 9 (basement). Discussions run the gamut of topics from medical issues to the environment to the courts. The discussion this week is on Finding a Cure: The Case for Regulation and Oversight of Electronic Health Record Systems.
This is a great way to learn about issues that are of interest to you as you move forward in your college and professional career as well as to meet other people interested in similar topics.
