Courses to Consider for Pre-health Majors

English Courses

English 217B - Writing for the Health Professions

This course offers students practice and training in writing for the health professions (e.g., medicine, nursing, dentistry). Beginning with professional development documents (resumes, letters of application and request, and project narratives), students will learn to adapt their writing skills to the demands of a healthcare audience. The course will then direct students' attention to scholarly and public health documents (abstracts, articles, and reviews) common to the health professions.

Sociology Courses

Health, medical sociology, and aging are areas that are highly relevant to pre-med and other health professions majors. Increasingly, a background in sociology is looked upon positively in the medical school admission process, since studying sociology enables the student to look at the patient not only in terms of symptoms but in terms of social location and context.

Pre-meds may want to consider the following courses:

SOCI 203 Human Development
SOCI 319 Sociology of Institutional Care
SOCI 311 Health, Illness and Social Behavior
SOCI 345/445 Sociology of Mental Illness
SOCI 443 Medical Sociology
SOCI 355 Aging and Health of Diverse Populations
SOCI 313/413 Stress and Coping
SOCI 361/461 Sociology of the Life Course
SOCI 365 Health Care Delivery

Others that have health-related and care-related content that could also be relevant include:

SOCI 302 Sociology of Race and Ethnicity
SOCI 333 Deviance
SOCI 369/469 Aging in American Society
SOCI 269 Young and Old in the 21st Century
