Designed for students planning careers as teacher-scholars, the Mellon Fellowships cover tuition
and the required fees for the first year of graduate study in a Ph.D. program in American Studies,
Art History, Classics, Comparative Literature, Critical Theory, Cultural Anthropology, Cultural
Studies, English Literature, Ethnic Studies, Ethnomusicology, Foreign Language and Literature,
History, History and Philosophy of Mathematics, History and Philosophy of Science, Humanities,
Interdisciplinary Studies, Music History and Theory, Philosophy, Political Philosophy, Political
Theory, Religious Studies, Rhetoric, or Women's Studies. Students must submit a five- to seven-page
academic writing sample and a 1000-word statement of interest. Applications are available by request
from the foundation's web site.
