Sheeba Joseph

Major: Biochemistry
Career Goal: M.D./Ph.D. in Biochemistry. Conduct cancer treatment research contribuing to the ongoing efforts to reduce the deleterious effects of living with cancer and help patients from both a health care and research perspective.


Purpose

Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry M Goldwater Scholarship is designed to attract outstanding students into careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit to students who are sophomores or juniors during the current academic year and who have excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in and potential for careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.

 

Application Procedure

  1. Case can only nominate up to four candidates each year, so there is a preliminary application screening process. If you wish to be considered, please complete and return the preliminary application to Dean Hamel in Sears 357 by November 1.
  2. The preliminary applications will be reviewed by Case's faculty representative. Students will be contacted as to whether their application has been moved on to the next stage.
  3. Students moved on to the next stage, will need to complete the formal Barry M Goldwater Scholarship application and return it to Dean Hamel in Sears 357.
  4. The final applications will be reviewed and students will be interviewed by Case's Goldwater Committee.
  5. Up to four applications will be endorsed and nominated by Case.

 

Eligibility

To be considered for nomination, a student must:
  1. be a current sophomore or junior pursuing a bachelor’s degree on a full-time basis. A
    current sophomore student in a two-year college who plans to transfer to a baccalaureate program may be nominated.
  2. have an average of at least B or the equivalent and be in the upper fourth of his or her class.
  3. be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or resident alien.
  4. have a demonstrated interest in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.
  5. be nominated by his or her college or university on the official nomination materials
    provided by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education.

Qualifications

  1. Preferred are students who have already been engaged in research or have some ideas about specific problems or areas they would like to investigate via research.
  2. The Foundation Board of Trustees will consider the nominee's field of study and career objectives and the extent to which that individual has the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her field.
  3. Nominees must include in their nomination materials a statement of interest in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, detailing how their academic program and their overall educational plans will prepare them for their chosen career goal.
  4. It is expected that students selected as scholars will pursue advanced degrees.

 

Selection Process

  1. The Goldwater Committee at Case will nominate up to four candidates and send the applications to the Goldwater Foundation.
  2. The Goldwater Foundation will convene a distinguished committee of educators; deans;and mathematics, natural science, and engineering faculty members who will review the nominee’s credentials and recommend a pool of qualified individuals to the Board of Trustees of the Goldwater Foundation.
  3. The Trustees will make the final approval.

Value of the Award

The scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board to a maximum of $7,500 per academic year. Junior scholarship recipients can expect to receive a maximum of two years of scholarship support. Senior scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of scholarship support.
