Orientation

When is Orientation?

Orientation for exchange students, new transfer students and binary engineering students will be held on Monday, August 21, 2006 from 9:00am-1:00pm. It is a half a day program that is specifically tailored to students who have previous college or university experience. It precedes the University's Welcome Days which begin on Wednesday, August 23rd.

 

What activities should I attend?

Definitely attend Transfer/Binary Orientation and any session that is of particular interest to you. Don't forget to attend Welcome Days which will bring together the entire campus community of students!

Housing and Accommodations

How do I apply for housing?

The housing application can be downloaded from the housing web site. The application can be submitted once you received your letter of admission and I-20.

 

Where can I live on campus?

You may request housing for either north or south campus residence halls. You are not permitted to reside off campus or in fraternity or sorority houses.

 

When will I get my room assignment?

Housing assignments are completed in July. You should receive email confirmation of your housing assignment and check-in locations. If you have not received confirmation of your housing assignment, please contact the office of Housing, Residence Life & Greek Life.

 

When can I move in to my room?

Move in begins Sunday, August 20, 2006. Please notify Dean Claudia Anderson in the Office of Undergraduate Studies if you intend to arrive after August 20.

NOTE: University offices are closed on week-ends with the exception of your check-in location. On Monday, August 21 or soon after you arrival, you are required to contact the Office of International Students located in Sears Building, 2nd floor. They can be reached by calling 216-368-2517. University offices are open Monday-friday from 8:30am-5:00pm.

 

What do I need to bring for my room?

You will be required to supply your bed linens, pillows, towels, etc. There are several shopping areas within bus/taxi distance. Severance Mall is located on Mayfield Road and South Taylor Road in Cleveland Heights (not within walking distance!). Many stores close by 5:00pm on Sundays so please keep that in mind. You may wish to have items shipped to your designated check-in location (to arrive no more that one week in advance) to that they are here when your arrive on campus.

 

Registration and Adviser Information

How do I register for classes?

Exchange students, are not able to register for classes using SOLAR. (Student On-Line Academic Registration). Please complete the registration form included with your letter of admission. You may fax it to Claudia Anderson, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies at 216-368-4718 or mail it to her at:

NOTE: A meeting to review your course selections will be held on Thursday , August 24 at 2:00 pm in the Office of Undergraduate Studies, Sears Building, Room 357. It is important that you attend. Any corrections to your course schedule will be made at that time.

 

Who is my adviser?

Dean Anderson is your adviser while you are enrolled at Case. She will help you with your course selections and answer any other questions you may have.

 

Logistics of Being on Campus

How and when must I pay tuition/room and board?

Exchange students are not required to pay tuition to Case since you've already paid tuition at your home institution. If you receive a bill, please notify Dean Anderson immediately. Room and board charges including computer usage fees, must be paid by mid-October for fall and mid-March for the spring semester.

 

How do I activate my Case email account?

When you are accepted and have registered for classes as a visiting student at Case, an email account is automatically created! You just need to activate it. Once you submit all of your information, your account should be active in 24 hours. Even if you have an alternate email account that you prefer to use, you must activate your Case account and you can have your Case account forwarded to your preferred account.

 

How and where do I get my Case ID card?

Access Services, the department responsible for the issuance of ID cards, is located in the basement of Crawford Hall. In order to obtain a Case ID card for the first time, you must bring

  1. A copy of your class schedule. You must get an official printout from the Registrar's Office in Yost 110 (even if you have registered online).
  2. A driver's license or other picture ID (passport, government issued ID, etc.).

Make sure to hold on to your ID as your first ID card is free, but there is a replacement fee for cards that are lost or damaged. For more information on your Case ID, where you can use it and other options, check out the CaseOneCard site.

 

How do I get a parking permit and where can I park?

There is very limited street parking available on campus. All who choose to park on campus must purchase a hangtag parking permit and display it on the rearview mirror of their vehicle. You may purchase your permit at the Parking Office in the basement of Crawford Hall (It is the same place that you would go for your ID card).

University Bookstore

Once you register for class and activate your Case email account, you will be able to see which books you will need. You can order them from your MyCase portal, purchase them at the university bookstore, or from a place online.

The University Bookstore is located in the Thwing Student Center. Textbooks, new and used, are available for purchase, along with school and Case memorabilia. Required course materials are sorted by class and professor. For more information, call 368-1661. Open 8:30AM to 5:30PM, Monday through Thursday, Friday 8:30am- 5:00pm and 11am to 3pm on Saturdays.

 

Academic Polices and Procedures

Withdrawal Deadlines and Procedures

If you wish to withdraw from a class, you must meet with Dean Anderson in the Office of Undergraduate Studies. Once approved, you must take the required forms to the Registrar's Office for processing. Please pay attention to the withdrawal deadlines. Deadlines for the add/drop period and for complete withdrawal from a class can be found here.

 

MyCase Portal

MyCase portal is a customizable web page. You can add or remove links (also known as 'portlets') to see everything you would like in one convenient location, thus making finding information that much easier. This is where you can find your academic profile, your class schedule, final grades, etc. To log into your MyCase account, you will need your network ID and password. You can access the MyCase Login screen from Case's home page or from the MyCase homepage. Once logged into the portal, choose the Students tab for academic information.

 

Undergraduate Student Handbook and Academic Policies

The Handbook for Undergraduate Students is intended to provide you with information about student life, campus resources, and academic policies and procedures. You are responsible for familiarizing yourself with requirements, regulations and deadlines that pertain to your academic program and activities. This includes academic integrity and attendance policies as well as University polices and procedures. The Handbook is available online. If you would like a hard copy, pleas stop by Sears 357 and request a copy.

Campus Libraries

There are many libraries across campus that you can access. Listed below are a few of the main libraries. A complete list of libraries on campus can be found here.

Kelvin Smith Library

The Kelvin Smith Library, open to all Case students, is the largest of the facilities comprising the University Library, which has a combined collection strength of 1.5 million items. Along with books and other printed material, the KSL offers online resources, research databases, and a helpful, experienced staff. For more information, call 368-3506. Open 9AM to 8:30PM Monday through Thursday, and 9AM to 5:30PM on Friday and Saturday.

Allen Memorial Library

The Allen Memorial Medical Library comprises one half of the Cleveland Health Sciences Library (along with the Health Center Library ). It holds all of the clinical journals, which may be consulted in the Cushing Reading Room, and includes the 450 seat Ford Auditorium. It contains the Dittrick Medical History Center , consisting of the Dittrick Museum of Medical History , the Archives and Rare Book collection .

Astronomy Library

The Astronomy Library, located on the fifth floor of the Sears Building , houses the University's collections in the area of astronomy. Also accessible is a large array of astronomy-related journals and electronic resources. Open 9:30AM to 5PM, Monday through Friday. For more information, call 368-6701.

 

Computer Resources

There are many computer resources available for students. In addition to the computer labs listed below, students with wireless cards in their computer are able to access the wireless network from most places on campus. You will often times see students sitting outside on the quad with their laptops checking email or doing work.

PDELC

The Plain Dealer Electronic Learning Center (PDELC) is a computing facility located in 470 Sears. Attached to the Office of Educational Support Services, the PDELC contains state-of-art computer hardware and a friendly, helpful staff to answer your questions. Open 9AM to 5PM, Monday through Friday.

Nord Hall Computer Lab

The Nord Computer Lab is located in room 415 Nord. The lab includes 50 PC's running Windows XP, 4 Macintosh G4's running OS 10.3, laptop stations with Ethernet connections, a library of software, scanner, printers, and a copier. The lab reference desk may be reached at 368-5463. Open Monday – Thursday 9AM to 12AM, Friday 9AM to 6PM, Saturday 12PM to 6PM, and Sunday 12PM to 12AM.

 

Campus Map

To help find your way around campus, you can check out the campus map. You can find a specific building in the drop down box at the bottom of the map to find the building for which you are looking. Or, if you click on the map in it will zoom in to a certain area and add numbers to the buildings and list the corresponding buildings on the side of the map.
