Is there academic credit or other compensation for research?
Because most students need summer paid positions, this section concerns students who want a UR-CE position during an academic semester. Some positions are paid. Many research positions may begin with your volunteering your way onto a research team, especially if this is your first experience. Once you gain some experience, the faculty mentor is much more likely to move you into a paid position if you work in the summer or the next academic year. As for course credit, many departments, especially in the sciences and engineering, require some sort of research class. Check your major requirements. If you want elective study, discuss this with your academic advisor and undergraduate studies dean.
So you can see that many students begin with a volunteer position, then they may have a paid position, and then they may do research or a creative project for academic credit. However, all of this varies by student. |
