  • Welcome!

The CWRU Newcomers Group (formerly Committee) is a program of the Office of Faculty Development. Since its founding in 1992 by Sarah Taylor, the Newcomers has brought together volunteers (faculty spouses/partners and faculty) to welcome new members of the faculty and administration, and their families, to the CWRU community. Volunteers answer questions regarding the campus, University Circle cultural institutions, greater Cleveland, and any other topics that will assist you in your transition to CWRU.

We hold a number of events during the academic year including the Family Picnic each August, following the New Faculty Orientation. Additional events vary and may include brown bag lunches, morning coffees for spouses/partners, and family friendly potluck dinners. Our January visit to local restaurant Mi Pueblo has become a popular tradition, as has the annual Wine Tasting Party in Spring.

We look forward to meeting you and hope you will be able to attend one or more of our events. Please contact the Office of Faculty Development if you would like further information on our program during the year. Wishing you a smooth and enjoyable transition to our diverse and stimulating campus and city.

    Squire Valleevue Farm

The CWRU Newcomers Group invites all new faculty and their families/friends to the annual New Faculty Picnic from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 20, 2014. The picnic is provided, rain or shine, at Picnic Area #6, a covered pavilion at the CWRU Squire Valleevue Farm.

Come meet other new faculty as well as volunteers who can provide information about getting established in our community.

In addition to the usual picnic buffet (burgers, hot dogs, vegetarian options and so on) there will be a volleyball net, a large field for pick up softball (bring your glove!), and some toys/activities for smaller children. Newcomers Committee members will be at the picnic area from 4:00 p.m. onwards if you and your family members/friends want to explore the woods and ponds of this beautiful university property.

RSVP by Wednesday, August 13 by sending your name, email, number of adults, number of children (with ages), to or call 216.368.2464.

Directions to the farm, and the location of Picnic Area #6, can be found on the Farm website. If you have any questions, or if need any additional assistance, please call The Office of Faculty Development at 216.368.2426.

Current (not so new) faculty are also invited to attend the picnic to meet and welcome new faculty to campus. We are grateful for volunteers to help with set-up, games for children, and clean up for the event. Please let email if you would like to volunteer for this fun event.

We look forward to seeing you!
