About the Research Council

Purpose

slideshow

The primary purpose of the Research Council is to help advance discovery and creative endeavors at the University, especially at the boundaries between disciplines, by providing advice to the senior administration of the University through the Provost's office. The focus is not only on resources for research, including infrastructure, but also on administrative processes that influence research productivity and effectiveness. The connection between research and education (graduate and undergraduate, post-doctoral training) is generally an important part of the focus.

Functions
  1. Develop recommendations for funding interdisciplinary research, with emphasis on both revenue generation and resource allocation.
  2. Act as a sounding board for proposals for university-wide initiatives (centers, institutes, major initiatives, etc.), and advise the Provost on priorities for investments.
  3. Advise the Provost on policies for research, graduate education and post-doctoral training, and for support of students/trainees.
  4. Solicit and develop ideas about improving the physical and administrative infrastructure for research at the University.
  5. Bring forward ideas for new research initiatives with university-wide implications.
  6. Facilitate the exchange of information related to interdisciplinary collaborations across the University.
