UNIVERSITY REGISTRAR

OVERRIDES AND PERMITS

Some courses have limits on the number of students which may enroll in the course, which are set by the academic departments. Other courses require permits from the instructor(s) or from the department offering the course. Students may register for closed or permit-required courses only by obtaining an official override or permit from instructor(s) or from the departments offering the course. Permits and overrides may be paper or electronic. Students who request these courses on their course schedules will not be registered in the courses unless accompanied by such forms or unless an electronic permit or override has been issued. An override or a permit alone is not sufficient for registration and issuance of an electronic permit or override does not register a student for that course.

Overrides for Closed Courses

If the course has reached its enrollment limit and the instructor wishes to allow further registrations, an override is required prior to registration. See the number in parentheses following the current course enrollment on the Schedule of Classes for enrollment limits. Overrides are necessary for these courses only after the course has reached its enrollment limit. The Schedule of Classes is updated hourly and may not reflect all drop/add activity, so the current enrollment number shown may not be the actual current enrollment in the course. If you are registering using SOLAR and SOLAR tells you a course is closed, it has reached its enrollment limit, and you will need an override in order to register for the course.

Permits

Sometimes departments want to more closely control enrollment in a specific course. In order to do that, the course is flagged in the student information system so that a student cannot register without departmental permission. This permission is granted in the form of either a signed paper permit form (which must be brought to the Registrar's Office for processing), or an electronic permit that can be recognized by SOLAR (the on-line registration system). A permit is required if the statement "Permit Required" appears at the end of the course listing on the Schedule of Classes. Students not enrolled through the Weatherhead School of Management wishing to register for WSOM courses requiring a permit must obtain permit(s) from the WSOM office in the Peter B. Lewis Building prior to registration.
