Brief Summary of IDEAL

IDEAL is three-year $921,000 NSF grant awarded in September 2009 to Dr. Lynn T. Singer, Deputy Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Case Western Reserve University, to seed equity and inclusion transformation with five regional public university partners, Bowling Green State University, Cleveland State University, Kent State University, the University of Akron, and the University of Toledo. The goal of this innovative partnership grant is to seed institutional transformation at leading universities in the northern Ohio region by creating an institutional learning community that is empowered to develop and leverage knowledge, skills, resources and networks to transform academic cultures and enhance equity and inclusion at partner universities. This is accomplished by adapting and disseminating successful academic leadership development and institutional transformation methods developed by CWRU during its five-year ADVANCE IT initiative, Academic Careers in Engineering and Science (ACES), which continues at CWRU as ACES+.

Each institution annually selects three S&E Change Leaders to participate in the IDEAL leadership development program. The Change Leaders are supported by IDEAL with a $3,000 stipend. The Change Leader Teams meet four times annually, and also confer with an IDEAL Team Coach twice annually. Each team develops an Annual Change Project with customized plans and actions for improving gender and underrepresented minority equity in S&E on its respective campus, with the implementation of the plans aided by the Co-Director to assure sustainability. Senior administrative leaders – presidents, provosts, deans – from each institution will join their Change Leader teams at two Plenary Conferences (September 17, 2010 and early fall 2011) to learn about the change projects from the Change Leader Teams.
