The Annual Women of Achievement & Spotlight Awards Luncheon

HELD DURING THE FALL SEMESTER EACH YEAR

This annual event celebrates the tenure and promotion and recognitions achieved by women faculty members at Case Western Reserve; and honors one woman from each school at Case Western Reserve for their excellence in research and scholarship. (Recipients chosen by their schools.)

Awards presented October 7, 2011
2011 Mather Prize honorees were:

	Diane Bergeron Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior Weatherhead School of Management Dr. Bergeron's work is focused on organizational citizenship behavior. Her research has been published in leading journals including the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Management, and Human Performance. Two of her papers were published in the Best Paper Proceedings of the Academy of Management. She received two awards from the Academy of Management for her dissertation work and was a runner-up for the Academy of Management's Newman Award. Before coming to CWRU, Professor Bergeron was an adjunct instructor at Columbia University and at New York University's Stern School of Business.
	Maria Hatzoglou Professor of Nutrition School of Medicine Dr. Hatzoglou's major research interest has been the regulation of gene expression by nutrient availability. She has presented at numerous international conferences as well as throughout the U.S. Her honors include a fellowship from the National Hellenic Research Foundation, a Basil O'Connor Research Award from the March of Dimes, and continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She has a large body of published work including articles in Nature and the Journal of Biological Chemistry. She is the recipient of a Merit Award from the National Institute of Health.
	Erin Lavik Elmer Lindseth Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering Case School of Engineering Dr. Lavik's research focuses on the development of new approaches to understanding and treating injuries and diseases of the spinal cord, optic nerve, and retina. She has won a number of awards including the TR100 award in 2003 and the NIH Director's New Innovator Award in 2010. Beyond her research, Dr. Lavik has developed classes including Applied Tissue Engineering where the students make and test artificial arteries and learn about the issues involved in translating the technologies from the bench to patients.
	Shirley M. Moore Edward J. and Louise Mellen Professor of Nursing& Associate Dean for Research Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing As a behavioral scientist Dr. Moore's research focuses on recovery following cardiac events and promoting healthy lifestyles. In a series of studies Dr. Moore developed and tested interventions to improve physical and psychological health following cardiac events. Using the principles of environmental redesign, Dr. Moore's SystemCHANGE intervention has been shown to effectively change lifestyle behaviors. Dr. Moore also is the Director of an NIH-funded Center of Excellence in Self-Management Research and the FIND Lab (Full Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Research).
	Leena Palomo Assistant Professor & Director of DMD Periodontics School of Dental Medicine Dr. Palomo's research focuses on the link between oral and systemic health in post-menopausal women: from periodontal disease risks to surgical outcomes and diagnostic imaging. She was a finalist for the "Young Investigator Award," for the International Association of Dental Research Implantology Research Group in 2007. Dr. Palomo mentors dental students, graduate residents and university undergraduates in both the SOURCE and SAGES capstone programs. She lectures extensively on periodontal topics related to women and serves the community through her private practice of periodontics and dental implant services.
	Cassandra Burke Robertson Associate Professor School of Law Professor Robertson has published articles in the leading journals Columbia Law Review, Boston College Law Review, and the Washington Law Review, among others. Dr. Robertson has built a reputation as a scholar in the areas of Professional Responsibility/Ethics and Transnational Litigation, and has conducted important interdisciplinary work involving economic theory, organizational behavior theory and cognitive development theory. She has become sought after on the legal conference circuit and has been invited to co-author papers with leaders in her areas of research.
	Sandra W. Russ Professor of Psychology College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Russ has served as President of the Society for Personality Assessment, of the Clinical Child Section of American Psychological Association, and of the Division of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts in APA. She developed the Affect in Play Scale which assesses pretend play in children. She is author of Affect and Creativity: The Role of Affect and Play in the Creative Process, Play in Child Development and Psychotherapy: Toward Empirically Supported Practice, and of Russ & Niec (Ed.) Play in Clinical Practice: Evidence Based Approaches.
	Aloen L. Townsend Professor of Social Work Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences Dr. Townsend's research interests, primarily funded by the National Institute on Aging, are in adult development and aging, family relationships, mental and physical health, and the interface between families and formal service systems. At the Hospice of the Western Reserve, she completed an assessment of family caregiver strain and resources during end-of-life care. Dr. Townsend is a Fellow of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Section of the Gerontological Society of America and Invited Faculty at the Institute on Aging and Social Work, funded by the National Institutes of Health.
